Audio and high fidelity audio receivers, satellite television receivers, and crystal radio receivers or radio sets are some of the most common and popular forms of radio receivers in the market today. All these equipment are generally known as radio receiver. Radio receivers are defined electronic circuits that act as detector, demodulator and amplifier of transmitted signals. These signals are then being transformed into usable form such as sound, pictures, digital data, measurement values, navigational positions, etc.

An AV receiver is a type of receiver which uses an amplifier, a preamp/processor, and an FM/AM tuner. Along with audio and high fidelity audio receivers, this type of receiver is the most commonly used type especially by home stereo listeners and audio and home theatre system enthusiasts. The increased need in better audio is brought about by the increasing number of high definition television and home theatre systems found in the market. On the other hand, there are also the satellite television receivers which can be considered as the most widely used radio receiver in the world today. This type of radio receivers is used to receive television programming from communication satellite found din the outer space. Given the fact that almost all homes in the world have at least one television set at home, it is no wonder that this type are the most popular and widely used.

Used in the reception of modulated AM/FM signals, crystal radio receivers or radio sets as they are commonly known are considered as the simplest type of radio receiver. The first example of this radio sets are the transistor radios popular during the early 1900's. These days, AM and FM radios are being integrated as parts of more common music and sound sources which includes cassette players, DVD/CD players, MP3 CD, USB key players. Other popular types of radio receivers include the communications receivers, specialized-used receivers, measuring receivers, and scanners. All these types of radio receivers are commonly used fro the purpose of entertainment. However, it is also important to note, that besides entertainment, these are also being used as tools fro business as well as security purposes.

The discovery of the electromagnetic waves in the 1850's by James Clerk Maxwell is the initial step the invention of radio receivers. Heinrich Hertz in 1887 demonstrated how electromagnetic waves work through the use of a spark gap equipment to transmit and receive radio waves. Alexander Stepanovich Popov on the other hand, was the one who designed the first ever radio receiver which was fir seen by the public eye in the All Russia Exhibition in 1896. Popov showed through an experiment how a wireless device is able to detect an electromagnetic signal through the air and can convert this into usable form just like the ways our mobile phones nowadays work.

Radio receiver technology in the present continuously moves forward. Receiver technology has improved greatly from the discovery of electromagnetic waves to the discovery of transistors and radio sets. Nowadays, this technology continues to move gradually but regularly. Converting signal to digital stream manipulated mathematically is now widespread and is popularly known as Digital signal processing. Different soft wares are also being used in order to be able to do other functions which are normally performed by an analogue intermediate frequency stage.

Radio receivers have indeed been a great leap in the field of science and technology. With these receivers, communication and entertainment have been made easier for consumers. From transistors, radio sets, television sets and today, cellphones, radio receivers have been a vital part in the search for ways on how to improve every individual's day-to-day living.

Surround Sound Speaker Systems

| Monday, June 20, 2011
By Owen Jones

The generations alive now, especially in the Developed world, are all au fait with speaker technology to a certain level. Most individuals began purchasing music centres in the Seventies if they were old enough and that trend has carried on and the technology has got better and better.

Audio reproduction has come on in leaps and bounds since the Fifties and Sixties when most individuals were content with a mono Dansette record player. My father was still listening to his favourite records on a wind-up record player with a dressmaker's pin for a needle and a trumpet for a loudspeaker in the early Sixties. Then he purchased a Dansette later in the Sixties.

I bought a Sanyo music centre in the Seventies and he followed suit. The quality of audio reproduction on those systems was laughable in comparison with what is in the shops these days.

The latest development is surround sound, which was only accessible in the cinema twenty years ago, but surround sound speakers are far better now than they were then and you can install them at home without requiring a bank loan.

Usually surround sound speakers are connected with film scores, so a surround sound speaker system could be fitted to the outline jacks on your television or home theatre system.

Home theatres are very much in vogue now that lots of people are having to stay in more frequently to save money. A small family that likes to go to the pictures once a week can recoup the costs of a good home theatre system within a year.

When looking at surround sound speakers, you may think that the cost is high, but do not forget that it is the surround sound speakers that transform a film into a cinematographic experience. They also last forever if not abused.

Two bits of advice: buy the best that you can afford and get speakers that will stand on the floor or can be hung on the wall.

Purchase quality rather than quantity. If you can just afford two speakers of great quality, so be it, You can buy another one later. With surround sound, the rule is: the more speakers the better.

Three is the absolute minimum, seven is fine, but eight is far better. The more speakers that you have, the less volume you will have to drive through them so the longer they will last.

The above configurations will be stated as: 2:1 (stereo plus a sub-woofer); 6:1 (front and back stereo speakers, a front central channel and a rear sub-woofer); 7:1 will add a rear central channel.

A good thing concerning this sort of surround speaker system is that you can easily upgrade it, but you have to start properly by buying a recognized marque that will allow you to add speakers throughout the years.

One of the best speaker systems you can purchase is Bose, but they are expensive, but they are also the envy of any sound enthusiast as well. If you would like the best, but do not have the capital take your time building a system of Bose surround sound speakers.

If You Are Looking For Two Way Radios, Take A Look At The Motorola MH230R 23-Mile Range 22-Channel FRS/GMRS

|
By Alexa Lie

There will come a time when you need to have a way to keep in touch with a group of people that are spread out in all different directions. To put it in simple terms, two way radios can actually help you keep in touch with a group of people when you need to.

I would like to share with you how the Motorola MH230R 23-Mile Range 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio helps us on our Lake Champlain yearly fishing expeditions. There are usually 10 to 20 of us and we normally bring 5 to 8 boats. When it was time for meals, we always try to eat at the same time but locating everyone on the lake was just about impossible. Often we would be searching for people for hours, and never be able to find them.

Then I had the great idea to buy a few of these radios and put them in a couple of of the boats to try them out. I kick myself for not buying more radios to start with since they worked great. We never lost contact with the boats that had a radio, of course I didn't have enough radios for every boat so we still would lose people. Then the succeeding year I got more of these so every boat had one. Which worked out well since the previous year my uncle's boat wouldn't start and he was about 3 miles from the camp. My uncle contacted us on the two-way radio and the first thing he did was thank me for buying the radios and then told me that his boat wouldn't start. So we went out and towed him and his boat back to the house. If he couldn't have gotten in touch with us, he would have rowed back a few miles.

Buying these two-way radios one of the best buys I have ever made. Something else I love is that these two-way radios come with rechargeable batteries so you don't have to worry about bringing enough batteries with you when you use them. You can even know what the weather is with the weather band that these radios have.

And as my mother commented, these Motorola radios are terrific for a lot of other things as well. My mother decided to take all her grandkids to Disney Land and wanted to know if she could bring the radios with her, naturally I said yes. She clipped a Motorola radio on all my nieces and nephews just in case they got lost. Fortunately, they were not needed but it is a great idea when taking a group of kids anywhere.

Another thing that we use these Motorola radios for is when we go out hunting as we cover 186 acres when we hunt and it is a fantastic way for people to tell the other people in the group if they are leaving the woods. You have no idea what a time saver this can be unless you have ever been walking around the woods trying to search for somebody you can't find, merely because they got cold and decided to go home.

You can even purchase headsets for these radios for even simpler use. With 121 privacy codes and 22 different channels that can are available, you need not worry about other Motorola radios interfering.

Amazon.com has these radios for $39.95 for a set of two, and that is actually a great bargain. While I have only shared several different ways that we have used the two-way radios, I am certain you can think of a lot more ways that you could put these radios to use.

Satellite Radio - Offering Superior Content And Quality

| Thursday, June 9, 2011
By Edward French

Leading to the rise of the satellite radio's popularity is the fact that it offers a better sound quality than terrestrial radio broadcasts. There are distinct advantages to satellite radio even though the content may not include everything you would like to hear.

Satellites are used by a satellite radio in order to deliver radio programs to subscribers. Broadcasted from Earth based stations to communicational satellites is the radio signal and this signal will be redirected to satellite radio receivers. Broadcasted to a much larger area than traditional terrestrial radio antennas is the radio signal.

The sound quality of satellite radio is comparable to that of a CD. Even though a satellite radio, like cable TV, has to be paid for, it can be considered as a worthwhile expense because it is affordable enough. Switching to satellite radio is what many people have done mainly because of the superior broadcast quality.

There are no sound interferences, hissing, or other disturbances in a satellite radio because it is digital. The sound on satellite radio is crystal clear, and for bass lovers, the stronger accurate bass will be appreciated. According to most satellite radio subscribers, the quality is extremely close to that of a CD and it is coupled with more robust and mid range sounds as well as crystal clear high range sounds. Satellite radio is also not susceptible to sound problems caused by poor weather.

The content is the second factor that converts people to satellite radio. The major players in satellite radio sought exclusivity for some transmissions even though originally considered quite extraordinary and these elevated them above analog radio stations that often share content such as sports broadcasts. More than 100 programs that vary in content from jazz, rock, rap, as well as classical music is what satellite radio services provides its subscribers. With satellite radio, exclusive sports programs, educational and cultural shows, news and talk-shows are also being offered.

When it comes to satellite radio, another benefit it offers is that there are only a few of their channels that retransmit terrestrial programming. The best part is that satellite radio has no advertising and most of their music channels are created in house. Many subscribers find this lack of interruption from endless commercials appealing.

If you want a satellite radio at home or in the car, then you will need to subscribe to one of the satellite radio broadcasts and buy a receiver as well. Receivers can cost $300 to $500, and monthly subscriptions are usually under $20 a month. While this is not out of reach for many, it does mean that subscribers expect a certain level of content and broadcast quality. Unlike the terrestrial radio stations, many would feel that paying for radio service would mean that the broadcasters will be likely to maintain and improve those standards. Paying a little for a better service is something most people would do.

Should I Buy an FM Car Modulator?

|
By James M. Boersma

An FM car modulator is a great product that allows someone to play music from an iPod, or any MP3 player, over your car stereo. This is how it works: the modulator converts the audio from your iPod into an RF signal which is sent to your car's radio and played on an FM station. While this ability is extremely cool and convenient, there are some drawbacks with a modulator.

The drawbacks of a modulator start with the fact that a modulator is permanently installed in your vehicle. This creates obvious problems if it breaks, stops working, or if you want to sell the car. In order to avoid any headaches over instillation and uninstallation, you may want to consider an alternative to the FM car modulator.

But, are there any other quality alternatives out there?

The cheapest option is the cassette adapter, which connects the MP3 player to the audio system via a 3.5mm input through the tape deck. Unfortunately, this option is also the least reliable, as the tape often wears down relatively easily and the sound quality is not the best. Because cassette players are also obsolete, this option may not even available.

The only other option than is an FM transmitter, which can be purchased for as little as $15 dollars at any retailer. Unfortunately, these cheap FM transmitters provide poor audio quality and pick up strong interference from outside sources.

So now that you know to avoid the cheap ones, let me explain the advantages of a high quality wireless FM transmitter. A quality transmitter has the transmission quality that will give you exceptional audio quality. You will be able to broadcast over large distances with static and interference free audio. The most important thing that separates a transmitter from a modulator is that a transmitter is a portable device. So unlike a modulator a transmitter can be transported from place to place which allows you to be in control of your music no matter where you are.

An FM transmitter will also provide a consumer with the following benefits:

1. Installation and setup is a breeze. No manuals or prior knowledge required.

2. Compatibility (it works with almost any audio source).

3. A quality FM transmitter is not constrained to just a few frequencies to transmit on. Quality units are able to transmit on the entire public FM band.

4. Stereo and mono settings, preset frequencies that allow you to easily switch between favorites, microphone compatibility, volume and mute control, manual on/off switch and automatic gain control.

5. Various ways to power the transmitter (e.g., cigarette lighter, wall adapter, USB and batteries)

6. Excellent audio quality with essentially no interference. The transmission power will allow you to broadcast to a distance of about 150 feet (close to the maximum allowed by the FCC).

When you factor in all of these advantages, an FM Car Modulator just can't compete with an FM transmitter. High quality FM transmitters will enable the user to control their music in a number of situations, without sacrificing their audio quality. In addition, because these devices are portable and so versatile, they provide the user with unlimited options. As a result, a high quality FM transmitter will provide a user with the most bang for their buck, making it an invaluable commodity as use increases.

Issues You Must Know When Considering TV Aerial Installation

| Thursday, June 2, 2011
By James Sollis

Nowadays, watching television has becoming a necessity that cannot be overlooked. You get to know what is happening around the world and important world events that are taking place. The only hindrance in deriving concentration when you are watching crucial news or programs is the TV aerial. While people near the broadcasting transmission towers experience no signal blockage, those located away from the signal tower are interrupted by trees and building that weakens the signals. This is why you should opt for a TV aerial installation.

If you are in an area that is overly obstructed from the signals, you will need the signal boosters. In most cases, television images are distorted by either the ghost interference or the snow interference. You find that in snow interference, the images are disrupted by the heavy grains occurring as a result of weak transmission of signals. However, this type of interference can also take place if your antenna is of low quality or your TV has some technical problems.

Ghost interference on the other hand happens when two or more signals from different transmission sources are received by your antennae. The result is usually displayed as many overlapping images. When the original signal is interfered with, the multiple signals occur. This occurs when mountains or occasional aircraft makes the original signal to bounce.

You should find the best place in your home to install the antennae to avoid this problem. A signal meter can be used to do this. You can be assisted by someone in locating the best spot where the image is clear and stable. Remember to be careful not to harm yourself.

Currently, there are some TV aerial installations companies that can help you get good quality pictures on your television in addition to the best broadcasting stations. You will be obliged to make a choice between the indoor antenna and the outdoor antenna. The indoor antenna will be small in size and easy to install and adjust. You can then connect it via Ethernet or coaxial cable.

The outside antenna will be large; it is usually mounted on op of the roof or high up into the air above your house. Remember that the higher your antenna is the better reception you will get. Consult a technician who will install the equipment for you. You can get good products of this kind from many retail stores or buy them online.

If your TV does not receive quality images or still has interference, look for a technician to see if it has malfunctions inside. You can also purchase boosters for the signal if you reside in places where the tower is far away and there is high level of interruption before the image reaches you. However, always remember that the signal is strong when the TV aerial is high in the air since the interruption is low.

Satellite Radio: What Are Quality, Content And Availability?

|
By Owen Jones

Satellite radio has really taken off. It is extremely popular for two or three main reasons such as quality, content and availability. In the perspective of satellite radio, quality refers to the quality of sound that is capable of being reproduced by the equipment because of the signal; content refers to the kinds of programmes being transmitted by the different radio channels or stations and availability refers to the footprint or coverage of the satellite, that is how much area of land receives the signal from the satellite.

All these comparisons are made with terrestrial radio broadcasts naturally. For example, we all know that standard AM or FM stations differ hugely in quality, the content can be heavily interspersed with advertising, jingles and mindless chatter and coverage is usually only on a very localized basis.

The two big players in the American satellite radio market are of course Sirius and XM and each one is attempting to out do the other in these three areas

Normally, satellite radio produces a quality of sound which is similar to CD quality. This is extremely high, especially if you use good quality equipment to replay the signal received. If you just replay satellite radio through tinny, ancient, blown speakers, then you will hardly benefit from this boost in quality at all.

Quality, content and coverage have all played a part in increasing the popularity of satellite radio, but it is probably content which has played the biggest part.

You may be wondering why anyone would want to pay for subscription radio, when there is so much free radio about. It is a fair question, but in fact, similarities can be made with cable TV and broadcast television. Why do people pay for that? Is it the sound quality? Or the content? Or what? A lot of cable TV is rubbish as well. Sports coverage, possibly.

At least the preponderance of satellite radio is free of commercials. That has to be worth a few dollars a month and it is in fact a large selling point. Many people cite the lack of commercials as one of their foremost reasons for moving to satellite radio.

It is likely that all big league sports coverage will move to subscription only over the next few years. This will inevitably be carried out with the utilization of satellite radio. American football, soccer, baseball, basketball will all either get their own nationwide stations or be bundled with other stations

People are bored with with the amount of advertising on AM and FM radio, but at the end of the day, the main reason whether to get satellite radio or not for most people rests on content not even so much on the quality of the sound. If sport is taken off terrestrial radio and only available on satellite radio, then people, particularly men, will switch to satellite radio, which is exactly what happened with cable and satellite television.
