Televisions and internet are one of the main outputs of advancements in technology. These tools have made access to different events happening around the globe easier and faster. However, radio broadcasting, done through radio sets, is undoubtedly still an important tool in providing information as well as entertainment to the public.

Technically defined, radio broadcasting is a one way transmission over radio waves intended on disseminating information to a wide audience. Cable FM, local wire networks, satellite, and the web are being linked in order to be able to broadcast common programming. The history of radio broadcasting started when Guglielmo Marconi, in 1899, first set-up wireless communication between France and England.

By the year 1906, the first radio transmissions of voice and music occurred on Christmas Eve and were performed by a naturalized American citizen born in Canada named Reginald Aubrey Fessenden. This transmission started the different experiments made on radio communications. One of the first of these experiment is the invention of devices which allow only two parties to communicate to more advance projects allowing signal to be transmitted to larger audiences.

Station 8MK in Detroit, Michigan was the first ever news bulletin broadcasted to the public in August of 1920. Entertainment over the airwaves from Marconi, Institute at Wrisstle was then sent out through radio broadcast by the year 1922. Afterwards, around 1930's to the late 1940's radio broadcasting experienced its "golden age". The year 1980 ended this golden age through to the decrease in popularity of radio broadcasts brought about by the increase in the popularity of the television. This decline in popularity however was solved in the 90's when FM broadcasts started changing their formats and included music, news, weather, and sports broadcast. By this time, FM stations began dominating the market.

Then and now, radio broadcasting through radio sets-or through the internet and other means today-is still deemed indispensable. Radios are a great company any time, any place, and anywhere. It can be listened to at home, in the car, at work, in shopping malls, or even in parks.

Though television has taken over much of the entertainment, news, and sports event duties, there are still a number of aspects where radios are more necessary. Local radio stations, for example, are vital for communities keeping members of the covered group up to date with local news and other upcoming events local to the community. Also, people wanting to have their voices and opinions heard often opt for radio phone-ins. More importantly, especially for travellers who just can't make it to a television, radio broadcasting is still the next best thing.

Radio broadcasting nowadays comes in different types depending on the target market of the radio station. The contents of the broadcast greatly depend in the audience. Broadcasting can either be a National Radio, Regional Radio station, a Local Radio, or a Community radio. These types are specific and only cover a specific region. An example of this is the difference in the type of news covered by a national and community radio. The first one covers national news while the latter cover news that is most likely seen in the local community newspaper. Internet, cable and satellite stations, hospital, student or university campus radio, and/or pirate radio stations are other types of broadcasting being practiced

Radio sets are still considered important parts of our everyday lives, especially with the still thriving support of different communities for radio broadcast. Radio sets, through radio broadcasting contribute to the propagation of information as well as providing entertainment.
